Text for reading: Psalm 146
By Mike Divis
We live in a world where men struggle with the basic elements of life. Who are we, why are we here, and where are we going when we leave? There are two basic beliefs among men: either we are the result of an evolutionary process, which denies any intervention of a supernatural being and any miracles in said process; or we acknowledge that all things come into being by the hand of an eternal God. Thus, God is. Charles Darwin, in his “Origins of the Species” (1859), expressed a belief in a life-giving God. Later, in his 1860 edition of “Origins of the Species,” Darwin acknowledges a creator breathing life into one or a few (primitive) organisms. Later, Darwin confessed to being agnostic, though denying that he was atheistic. In his writings “Descent of Man” (1871), Darwin thought religion was a psychological mistake. Such is the mindset of most men who do not know God or acknowledge the Creator as God. Rom. 1:20ff. We do not have to be confused or speculate if there is a God or not. We can know. Even Charles Darwin had difficulty explaining the origins of all things if there is no God who miraculously created all things (or in Darwin’s mind, at least gave life to a few primitive life forms, which in return would produce all other living life forms).
The Bible does not set out to prove the existence of God, but rather states “God is” from the beginning as a fact. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Gen. 1:1. To the very last verse of the Bible: “The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen.” Rev. 22:21. Now this is not to say there is not both internal evidence (evidence within the Bible) or external evidence (evidence outside the Bible) that proves the existence of God. The word faith simply means “taking God at His word.” Faith is neither blind nor ignorant. Men of old recognized that God spoke all things into existence by the word of His mouth. Heb. 11:3. The Bible gives us answers to all things that pertain to life and godliness through a true knowledge of Jesus Christ. 2 Pet. 1:3. The Psalmist demonstrated confidence in an everlasting God over the temporal and unstable help of mankind. Psa. 146 (our text). The truth about God and His eternal existence is not known by the imagination of the human mind. Jer. 10:23. Rather, by faith we can know God and believe that He exists and He is a rewarder to those who believe in Him. Heb. 11:6. Said faith comes from hearing God’s word. Rom. 10:17. “God is.”
God is Infinite (limitless). God cannot be limited by anything that is outside of His own character. God is Immutable (unchangeable). “For I am the Lord, I do not change…” Mal. 3:6. “God is not a man, that He should lie, not a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said and will He not do?” Numbers 23:19; Heb. 6:17,18. So then, God is good – He is infinitely good. God is love – He is infinitely love. God is just – He is infinitely just. God is righteous – He is infinitely righteous, etc. God is Infinite. Since God is Infinite, He is also Self-Existent. He has always existed, neither having a beginning nor an end.
God is Personal. God is a self-conscious Being capable of thought in His creation of ones created in His own image. After the immense power of creating all things in six days, God thought, willed by self-determination, to have a personal interaction with His creation. “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.” Gen. 1:26. The plural pronouns indicate that God is a creative Being of more than one personality. He is the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Isa. 48:12-16; Matt. 28:19. Thus, God wants all of us to come to Him and believe in Him. Heb. 11:6.
God is Creator. Gen. 1:1. The Cosmos, Universe (now we know there are many universes), all of Earth and the living organisms upon the Earth, were created by the Living God. All things physical came into being by His word. Jn. 1:3. Evidence of order in the creation, speaks of the Creator. There is intelligent design, order in the universe, and moral code to guide men, as evidence of God’s being. The creation speaks of the Creator. Rom. 1:20. From the complexity of the universe and beyond, to the complexity of the human being, to our very genetic makeup. God is. Acts 17:25,26. It was within this creation of man that God desired that men would seek Him. Acts 17:27. So we can clearly see God is, and to believe otherwise, we are without excuse. Rom. 1:20. God is Immaterial and His existence is non-physical, being distinct from His creation of all things. Such power, as seen in creation, speaks of God’s self-sufficiency. God has no needs, from men or anything else. He cannot be improved upon, thus as stated, cannot change. This is why Paul stated to the Athenians that we humans, on the other hand, are totally dependent upon God for even our very breath. Acts 17:25. Needless to say then:
God is Omnipresent. He is present everywhere, at all times.
God is Omnipotent. God is all powerful and can do all things that are consistent within His Character. Example: God cannot lie.
God is Omniscience. Since God created all things, He knows all things, and all things are within His sovereign right to control.
God is Eternal. God had no beginning and will have no end.
God is Perfect. God has no flaws, lacks nothing, and is perfectly moral. This is the reason we are to be moral beings. Only God has a right to legislate morality, though men try, often violating moral standards that God has predetermined. We are not righteous, no not one of us. God is truth, His word is truth. Jn. 17:17. Therefore, all of God’s judgments are infinitely and perfectly fair and just. His word is given to us, for our good always. Deut. 6:24. This truth helps us understand the Jealousy of God, Goodness of God, Wrath of God, Veracity of God, Foreknowledge of God, Patience of God, Majesty of God. Since He created you, He will sustain you. Acts 17:26-28; Gen. 1:26-28.
The Psalmist declares our praise to the Lord. Our help from God is everlasting. Not so from men. Men die, right along with their promises and our expectations of them. God does not die. He is our help and our hope. God will reign forever. Psa. 146:10. Will you let God reign in your heart? Through your genuine worship and trust in God, you become God’s greatest joy of all creation.
